What is the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) Programme?

Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) is a long-term residence programme introduced by the Malaysian government. It allows eligible foreigners and their family members to reside in Malaysia long-term while enjoying a quality living environment, international education, and healthcare services.

How long is the MM2H visa valid for?

Depending on the category, such as Platinum, Gold, Silver, and others, the visa validity may range from 5 to 20 years and may be renewable according to government policy.

Who can apply for MM2H?

In principle, all foreign citizens who are able to provide a certificate of no criminal record may apply for MM2H. The main applicant must be 25 years old or above and must meet the government’s requirements on property purchase, fixed deposit, and stay duration.

Is it compulsory to purchase property in Malaysia?

Yes. Applicants may purchase the property before application or within one year after visa endorsement. The property must be residential and cannot be sold within 10 years unless upgrading to another property. Applicants must meet the minimum property purchase requirement for each category, as well as the foreign property purchase threshold set by the respective state government.

Is the MM2H policy safe and stable?

MM2H was introduced in 2002 and has approved more than 60,000 applications. It is considered a mature and long-term programme.

Do MM2H applicants need to purchase medical insurance?

Yes, except for applicants aged 60 and above. Medical insurance is required during the visa endorsement and renewal years. For other years, applicants may choose whether to purchase it.

Do MM2H applicants need to undergo a medical check-up?

Yes. All applicants must complete a basic health screening at a designated medical institution in Malaysia before visa endorsement.

Can MM2H holders’ children study in Malaysia?

Yes. Children of MM2H holders may study at international schools, private schools, and selected higher education institutions in Malaysia, excluding public schools.

What international school options are available in Malaysia?

Malaysia has more than 200 international schools offering international curriculums such as British, American, IB, Australian, and Canadian systems.

Do MM2H holders need to pay Malaysian income tax?

Generally, tax is only imposed on income generated in Malaysia, such as rental income from Malaysian properties. Foreign-sourced income is exempted from tax in Malaysia. Applicants are advised to consult a professional tax advisor for specific tax arrangements.

Can MM2H holders open a bank account in Malaysia?

Yes. Once MM2H approval is obtained, applicants and their family members may open personal bank accounts and access related financial services in Malaysia.

Can MM2H holders purchase cars in Malaysia?

Yes. MM2H holders may purchase new or used cars in Malaysia.

How long must MM2H applicants stay in Malaysia each year?

For main applicants aged 49 or below, a minimum stay of 90 days per year is required. This stay requirement may be shared with family members.

For main applicants aged 50 or above, there is no minimum stay requirement.

Can the MM2H visa be renewed?

Yes. As long as the applicant continues to meet the relevant conditions and complies with MM2H programme requirements, renewal can usually be applied for before the visa expires.

Can I live in Malaysia if I do not speak Malay?

Yes. English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and other Chinese dialects are widely spoken in Malaysia, especially in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, and major cities. Many international schools, hospitals, banks, and government departments can communicate in English.

Is the cost of living in Malaysia high?

Compared with Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Europe, and the United States, Malaysia’s cost of living is relatively low. Housing, food, healthcare, and transportation are generally considered good value for money.

Are the MM2H application requirements very high? Is it easy to apply?

Overall, MM2H requirements are more flexible and have a lower entry threshold compared with traditional popular immigration destinations. The requirements mainly focus on financial capability and basic eligibility, including providing a certificate of no criminal record. The MM2H application process is relatively clear and straightforward.

Is MM2H the same as Malaysian Permanent Residency?

No. MM2H is a long-term residence visa programme and is not the same as Permanent Residency. Holders may reside in Malaysia long-term but do not enjoy the rights of permanent residents or citizens.
